Fifty-two weeks ago, I sat down at a coffee shop amid a late-April blizzard and started writing.
I wrote about family, about location, and about the marriage of the two. And when I was done, I didn’t know where to put it.
So I opened Substack and made an account.
That was April 30, 2023 — 367 days ago. (Leap year.)
I decided I’d write one newsletter a week. I didn’t know what I was going to write about and I didn’t know who was going to read it. But I knew I was going to write — and that was good enough for me.
And then … You started reading.
And you started messaging me about it.
And you started telling your friends and family about it.
And you made it real.
Today, 641 people receive this newsletter every Wednesday at 8:00 AM EST.
(And some of you even open it and read it!)
Together, we’ve raised more than $2,000 for the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital toy drive.
(That’s where your paid subscription money goes.)
We’ve learned for 52 weeks in a row about dots and drums, cats and fish, graveyards and “great jobs”.
(And about Isaac Newton and Eugene Bullard.)
And the best part of it all?
It’s only been a year.
Think about how much more we have to discover.
Back to our regularly scheduled programming next week.
But this week?
I just wanted to say thanks.
Adam
I'm glad you started Adam. Writing here for a year has done more for me than I think I realize even now- and I'm only now beginning to gain any traction or readership. It's given me a sense of ownership, ability, and satisfaction seeing my work through a whole year. Glad to be walking along the Substack road alongside!
